From Assistant Director to Bollywood Filmmaker: The Inspiring Journey of Punit Malhotra
Born and raised in Mumbai, Punit Malhotra grew up in a family deeply connected to Bollywood. With filmmaker David Dhawan and renowned designer Manish Malhotra in his extended family, cinema and creativity were always a part of his life. However, instead of directly stepping into direction, Punit chose to learn filmmaking from the ground up.
He started his journey as an assistant director on films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Dostana, where he gained valuable experience working behind the scenes. In 2010, he made his directorial debut with I Hate Luv Storys, which became popular among young audiences.
However, success did not come without struggles. After Gori Tere Pyaar Mein failed at the box office, Punit went through a difficult emotional phase and admitted that he spent months reflecting on his mistakes. Instead of giving up, he focused on improving his craft by directing ad films and building Dharma Productions’ ad division. The experience helped him regain confidence and sharpen his storytelling skills.
