Movies that brought in a wave of change in Bollywood

Bollywood has always been known for its entertaining song-and-dance spectacles and romantic melodramas. However, over the years, certain movies have defied convention and brought in a wave of change by tackling bold and unconventional themes, breaking stereotypes, and initiating meaningful conversations.

Let's take a closer look at five such influential films that redefined the landscape of Bollywood.

1. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Directed by Aamir Khan and Amole Gupte, "Taare Zameen Par" was an emotionally charged film that highlighted the struggles of a dyslexic child and the importance of understanding and nurturing individual talents. The movie, starring Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan, shed light on the challenges faced by children with learning disabilities and advocates for a more inclusive and sensitive approach to the education system.

2. Cheeni Kum (2007)
R. Balki's "Cheeni Kum" was a unique romantic comedy that defied age barriers. The film portrayed the love story between a 64-year-old chef, played by Amitabh Bachchan, and a 34-year-old woman, portrayed by Tabu. This movie challenged societal norms around age and love, celebrating the idea that age is just a number when it comes to matters of the heart.

3. English Vinglish (2012)
Gauri Shinde's directorial debut, "English Vinglish," was a heartwarming tale of self-discovery and empowerment. The film starred Sridevi in a comeback role as a middle-class woman who struggles to gain respect from her family due to her inability to speak English fluently. It broke barriers and challenged societal norms, earning accolades for its powerful storytelling and memorable performances.

4. Badhaai Ho (2018)
Badhaai Ho was a refreshing comedy-drama that tackled the taboo subject of late pregnancy. The film centered around a middle-aged woman, played by Neena Gupta, who becomes pregnant, leading to a series of humorous and heartwarming events in her family. It shattered stereotypes surrounding age and motherhood, normalizing the concept of embracing life's surprises with love and laughter.

5. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)

Directed by Hitesh Kewalya, "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan'' was a groundbreaking romantic comedy that dared to address the subject of same-sex relationships in India. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar, the film portrayed a same-sex couple fighting against all odds to find acceptance and love. With its unapologetic approach and humorous narrative, the movie initiated conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and challenged societal prejudices.
