Bollywood movies with highest IMDb ratings

The audience decides the fate of any given film and truth be told, they are brutally honest about it. They aren’t shy of dismissing a film as ‘bad’. Earlier, the masses relied on popular film critic reviews before heading out to watch a film. Today, they’re free to rate a movie and voice their opinion about it. IMDb (Internet Movie Database) is one of the biggest platforms to rate, read and know about films and genres. With people rating films with ‘stars’  - 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest - it is reflected in the overall average ‘rating’ of the film.


There are tons of Bollywood films loved unconditionally by the people because of their heartwarming stories and relatable characters. 


Let’s take a look at some of these Bollywood films with the highest IMDb rating.



1. Sardar Udham

This historical drama is based on Sardar Udham Singh(Vicky Kaushal), a revolutionary freedom fighter from Punjab who survived the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919). Enraged by the brutality of this event, he decided to seek revenge for the loss of more than 300 lives. The movie won the hearts of the audience and got an IMDb rating of 8.9


2. Shershaah:

This Sidharth Malhotra starrer released in August 2021 got 8.7 stars with 91,568 votes. It is a biographical tale of Capt. Vikram Batra - PVC awardee Indian soldier. The story covers his journey from his college days to his unimaginable feat as an Indian soldier in the Kargil War of 1999.


The film is directed by Vishnuvardhan Pachauri and has the presence of Kiara Advani as Dimple Cheema - the love interest of Capt. Vikram Batra. The film is produced by Dharma Entertainment and Kaash Entertainment and is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.


3. Black Friday:

Released 17 years ago - in 2004. It has achieved 8.5 stars with 19,932 votes. This film covers the investigation concerning the Bombay serial blasts of 1993. The investigation is unfolded by the experiences of several people involved - police, victims, conspirators and middlemen.

Black Friday is directed by Anurag Kashyap and stars Kay Kay Menon, Pawan Malhotra and Dibyendu Bhattacharya. 


4. Gol Maal (1979):

Released in 1979, the 144-minute story revolves around a man’s lie to secure a job. His orthodox boss gets suspicious and the story gets interesting, with a lot of twists. It has received a rating of 8.6 stars. It is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and stars Amol Palekar, Bindiya Goswami and Shubha Kothe. 


5. Dangal:

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this film is about a former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and the journey he undertakes with his two daughters towards Commonwealth games glory and shatters societal norms while doing so. It has 8.4 stars with 170,270 votes and stars Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra in the lead roles. 


6. 3 Idiots:

The first film to cross the 200 crore mark at the Box Office. The popular film revolves around the world of to-be-engineers from A-listed colleges of India. It focuses on the undue pressure exercised on students in these colleges. A tale of three friends who continue remaining friends for life even after college ends and how each of them supports and uplifts the other. The film has a rating of 8.4 on IMDb. It is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and stars Aamir Khan, R.Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor. 


7. Taare Zameen Par:

It is the story of an eight-year-old boy - Ishaan Awasthi who is considered a bad student for constantly scoring low marks and being undisciplined. One of the most moving characters created in Bollywood. His life takes a turn for the better when he meets an art teacher, Ram. The movie also became widely popular for its music score.


Taare Zameen Par has a rating of 8.4. It is directed and produced by Aamir Khan. It stars Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan as lead actors. 


8. Chhichhore:

The story is about Anirudh and his friends reliving and reminiscing about their college days, when they weren’t considered to have a bright future and were often termed as ‘Dumb’ whereas, in contrast, they achieved great success in their respective careers. It has received a rating of 8.3 on IMDb. It is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and stars Late Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma and Naveen Polishetty.


9. Uri: The Surgical Strike:

Directed by Aditya Dhar - It is the brave tale of the Indian army executing a secret operation - The Surgical Strike, based on true events which occurred in Uri in 2016. It has a rating of 8.3 stars and stars Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal and Yami Gautam. Largely shot in Serbia and Mumbai it is one of the highest-grossing movies of Bollywood. Vicky Kaushal was applauded for an epic performance in the lead role. 


10. Tumbbad:

Released in 2018, it is a mythological tale of a goddess - the creator of the universe and an evil demonic spirit that tries to harm people who try to take away a certain kind of treasure. It is from the horror genre and is directed by trio minds - Rahul Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi and Adesh Prasad. It has a rating of 8.3 and stars Sohum Shah, Jyoti Malshe, Anita Date and Ronjini Chakraborty. The movie earned widespread acclaim owing to its thrilling moments in the screenplay.


11. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The epic saga of India’s Flying Sikh, this movie is all about the hard toil, blood, sweat and tears that are shed to achieve success. It stars Farhan Akhtar in the lead role, with many other promising actors in supporting roles. Farhan did complete justice to the character, for which he physically trained meticulously apart from his stellar performance as an actor. It has a rating of 8.2 on IMDb.
