Old bollywood movies that were remade with new cast

Bollywood is as phenomenal as a film industry can get. From weaving new tales to finding inspiration from real life stories, Bollywood produces more than a thousand movies each year. One such source of inspiration of this new era is old classics. We all know those old classics were gold. Here are some of those classics all polished up with a new cast.

  1. Devdas (2002): The story of Paaro and Devdas in the history of movies is as old as the film industry. It is one of the most remade classics in Bollywood. However, the remake of 2002 is the one that takes the lead. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansaali, it features Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. With songs that make you move and phenomenal acting, it was submitted for the 75th Academy Award for the Best International Feature Film.

  1. Don (2006): Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal, Don (2006) is the remake of 1978 blockbuster of the same name. The remake turned out so good, that the producers took the storyline forward with a sequel in 2011. We can expect another sequel in the near future, with Farhan Akhtar directing the movie.

  1. Sahib Biwi aur Gangster (2011): It is a remake of 1962 movie Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam, that featured Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rahman and Meena Kumari. The original received appreciation as well as was nominated for the Golden Bear Award at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. The remake by Tigmanshu Dhulia added to the legacy. The storyline was made into sequels in the years 2013 and 2018.

  1. Agneepath (2012): Agneepath was a blockbuster in the Indian cinema, featuring Big B in 1990. The character of a powerful antagonist ‘Kancha Cheena’ was well portrayed in the remake by Sanjay Dutt. And as always, Hritik Roshan ruled the cinema with his phenomenal acting. Agneepath (2012), proved to be one of the perfectly polished remakes.

  1. Himmatwala (2013): Yet another classic, that featured Jitendra and Sridevi as the lead actors was remade in the year 2013 with the same name. It featured Ajay Devgan and Tamannah. Though it was not as hit as the original, it did a decent job of making people laugh with its comedy scenes.

Be it Bollywood classics or gems from the west, the recent decades in the Indian cinema have a thing for remakes. While some may not be as successful, it is still fun to revisit old classics.
