Bollywood movies that were internationally acclaimed

Bollywood is one of the largest film industries around the globe. Apart from spicy drama and sizzling romance, it produces a number of films that claim peoples' hearts around the world. These are spectacular movies that bring out the real image of India and Indian culture. 


The reason for such appreciation is that they intricately portray real lives on reel. Some of those Bollywood movies that were internationally acclaimed for their spectacular theme, acting and direction are as follows:


  1. Salaam Bombay: Inspired by the tragic and hard lives of street children in Bombay, Mira Nair alongwith Sooni Taraporevala produced this movie in the year 1988. The movie won the Golden Camera Award, the Audience Award, and the National Board of Review Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie was also featured as the best 1000 films ever made by the New York Times.



  1. Court: The courtroom drama was released in the year 2014. It portrayed the flaws in the Indian Judicial System. Though many of us don’t know about it, ‘Court’ was awarded the Best Film in the Venice Film Festival. It was also submitted for Academy Awards.



  1. Mother India: Mother India is regarded as one of the best movies ever produced. It was India’s first submission to the Academy Awards. It also became the first movie to get nominated. The movie produced by Mehboob Khan in 1957 won various awards at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. It portrays the struggle of a single mother in the world to survive against poverty.



  1. Awaara: Raj Kapoor’s acting is renowned globally. Awaara produced by him in the year 1951 was featured in the TIMES Magazine in their list of 100 Greatest Films Ever Made. It depicted the socio-economic differences and how it can impact an individual’s life. It was a blockbuster in East Asia, Middle Asia and the Soviet Union. There are also Turkish and Iranian versions of this movie.



  1. Devdas: Even though there are several versions of this movie, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, released in the year 2002 is the one we are talking about. It was included in the worldwide list of Top 10 Movies of the Millenium. It was adored by the audience and was nominated for BAFTA and the Academy Awards.



  1. Dil Se: Mani Ratnam is known for his unique and spectacular movies. Dil se (1998) is no different. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, the movie was loved by viewers around the world. It was appreciated for its screenplay and cinematography in various film festivals. In 1999, it won the Netpac Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.



  1. 1947- Earth: This Indo-Canadian film, starring Aamir Khan was released in the year 1998. Based on a novel, this movie was set during the 1947, Partition of India. It won the Best Film Award at the Asian Film Festival. The movie also received a 3 out of 4 stars rating by Roger Ebert who won a Pulitzer Prize in Film Criticism.



  1. Lagaan: Starring Aamir Khan, the movie was released in the year 2001. It has been receiving appreciation since. It was India’s Third Nomination for the Academy awards and was ranked in the 100 best films of World Cinema by the Empire Magazine in 2010. It was also included in the list of top 25 Best Sports Movies by Time Magazine.
