The inspiring journey of Ekta Kapoor

She is an iconic personality in the Indian television industry, who brought revolutionary changes in the way the Indian audience perceived television programs. A director, producer, and content creator, television Czarina Ekta Kapoor’s entrepreneurial adventure has been no less dramatic than one of her popular soaps. On the occasion of her birthday, we walk through the journey of Ekta Kapoor from broadcast to Bollywood.

As a young age of 19, with no plans for her future, Ekta was offered to develop a software for a London-based channel for the Asian diaspora. The project fell out, but it opened up a door for her which took her on an exciting journey. In a patriarchal industry already dominated by established entrepreneurs, Ekta worked twice as hard to surpass her competition.

She launched Balaji Telefilms along with her mother Shobha Kapoor and produced her first ever program called Padosan in 1995. Then, in 1999, she discovered the magical alphabet ‘K’ which brought her immense success.

Her first ever television serial in the ‘K’ series was Kanyadaan on Sony Entertainment. The show was premiered at Eros Cinema, which was an innovative way to debut a television show at that time.

Ekta’s major success and recognition came from Kyunki…Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which became one of the longest-running television serials in India. That was the beginning of an era of elaborate, long-running, soap operas which changed the face of broadcast entertainment.

Soon, Ekta launched Balaji Motion Pictures and joined mainstream Bollywood production. Some of the most iconic films under her production banner were Love Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD), Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, Ragini MMS, The Dirty Picture, Veere Di Wedding, among many more. With the successes of each of her films, she became a leader in innovative cinematic entertainment.

In 2017, Ekta Kapoor forayed into digital entertainment with ALT Balaji- a video-on-demand platform for the digitally-connected, millennial audience. The channel has produced more than 20 web series and films.

From one generation of television to another, followed by films, and now digital space, Ekta Kapoor has truly been a game changer in the entertainment landscape.
