Many of our current crop of Bollywood stars started their careers behind the cameras. While most of them worked as assistant directors, as that gives you the closest access to the filmmaking process, there are a few who have dabbled in other aspects of cinema. In one of her interviews, Alia Bhatt spoke about being utterly clueless about how different camera angles and set-ups worked before she began working on Student Of The Year, and how Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra both had more experience than her because of their AD gigs. Being on the other side of the camera can actually be a big learning curve for actors.

With a degree in Business Management from the Nottingham Trent University, Varun chose to work as an assistant director to Karan Johar for the 2010 SRK-Kajol starrer My Name Is Khan.

Soon he began accompanying his dad to film sets, and ended up working as an AD for Anurag Kashyap onGangs of Wasseypurin 2012.
With her father Anil Kapoor’s recommendation, Sonam landed the job of an AD to Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black in 2005. It was Bhansali, who had coaxed her into losing weight to become an actor and eventually cast her in Saawariya.
Parineetiearned a triple honours degree in business, finance, and economics from Manchester Business School before landing a job in the PR team of Yash Raj Films courtesy cousin Priyanka Chopra.
Bhumi worked as an assistant casting director with Shanoo Sharma for YRF for six years before she ventured into acting!
A trained ballet dancer, Vikrant worked for Shiamak Davar before foraying into acting. He was an actor-cum-choreographer on the TV show Dhoom Machaao Dhoom before Balika Vadhu happened for him.
Sonam’s little bro, Harshvardhan worked as an AD with Anurag Kashyap onBombay Velvetin 2015, a year before he made his debut withMirzya.
After pursuing a course in method acting from the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, Ranbir came back and landed the job of an AD on Bhansali’s Black, along with his Saawariya co-star Sonam. He had earlier assisted his father, Rishi Kapoor, while he was directing Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999.
Arjun not only worked as an AD before becoming an actor, he even worked as an assistant producer. He worked as an AD for Nikhil Advani onKal Ho Naa HoandSalaam-e-Ishq, and worked as an assistant producer for his father, Boney Kapoor, onNo EntryandWanted.
