Started his career as an assistant director to Randhir Kapoor. He then ventured into producing films and his maiden venture "Border" was a blockbuster and was the recipient of most awards in the respective year. His last film introduced Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor. Mr. Dutta is currently working on a major project titled `LOC'
