Based on William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, the story revolves
around Maqbool, Abbaji and Nimmi, three characters who could have been
in any walk of life, in any city of the world, at any point of time. Maqbool
is the second-in-command of a gang, led by Abbaji, an ageing underworld
don. But it is love that betrays Abbaji. Nimmi, his young mistress, finds
the majestic Maqbool more charming, and decides to use the ambitious gangster
to get rid of her paramour. The course of events are correctly predicted
periodically by the two police officers- Inspector Pandit and Inspector
Purohit, who abet Maqbool’s gang and remind us of the witches from ‘Macbeth’.
But perhaps, even they cannot predict the consequences of this dangerous
love where there is only one rule: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.”

Plot
A work of art is the only phrase to describe
this historical saga whose grand palaces-and-fountains look has an epic
sweep. Not surprisingly, Mughal-E-Azam has become a must-see classic.
Forty-four years after it took the Hindi film industry scene by storm, the
newly restored and colourised film with modified songs, surround sound and
wide-screen format was released in 2005 and once again has become a superhit.
'Mughal-E-Azam' is the ultimate
picture of grandeur seen in Hindi cinema. K Asif's screen adaptation of the
legend of Salim and Anarkali, has all the qualities of a monumental epic.
Larger than life characters, portrayed by towering icons, lavishly mounted
sets, deftly shot war sequences and, above all, a passionate love story that
defies the established order of its day.
